“I was a king you know, a god. They worshiped me.”
“What happened?”
“The same thing that always happens when you give a fool power; I became greedy.”
“…I became greedy, and I decided to try to stop death.” She leaned back on her throne. Her paper thin skin painted with blue rivers of life. “All I did was create a monster.”
“How?” He sat on the steps cautiously. He wasn’t deceived by her frail looks, he believed she could easily destroy him with little to no effort. A flick of her wrist and his life blood would flow from his veins.
“A mother doesn’t see the monster in her child’s face.” She closed her eyes to walk through memories. He listened intently as she described a simpler time. One with love and peace. She described the joy of her wedding day. Her rapture for the night of. Then a tear slowly slid from her cheek as she recalled the call to arms. Her begging for her husband to be spared. The devastation that still choked her when shoulders had returned but her husband had been in a box. The child growing within her. How he was her only reason to continue.
“When I first looked upon his face I saw my beloved.” She whispered opening her gaze again. “And I knew I could not loose him again.”
“Go on.” He whispered afraid she would stop. After a heart beat she continued. Describing how she had hunted for any and all sources that hinted at the ability to cheat death. Until she found the book.
“He became what he is because of me. I am his creator.” She smiled bitterly.
He stood up and bowed his head. “Thank you for the information.”
He left behind a bloody stake in an old woman’s heart. From the air the terror that had tormented the world for a century plummeted to the unforgiving ground across the city.
